A recently purchased 2.3 petrol mk11 Galaxy Manual, after a 700 mile trip to Cornwall started up normally stalled and then and then failed to start. Ie The engine won't crank as if the battery is flat.

New battery fitted same symptom. Starter a bit of a smell if holding key in start position indicating a failed starter. New starter fitted. Same symptoms.

With a fully charged brand new battery (tested) and a new starter, the engine only turns over slightly about half a revolution and stops?

I am assuming there is an electrical fault perhaps with an earth strap having come detached or another explanation.

Help please - this is driving me mad. No fault codes and I am mechanically competent having trained as a mechanic many moons ago.

Where is the engine or gearbox earth strap please?

Has anyone else had this experience? and could there be a more sinster explanation?

Thanks

Do a search for fusebox issues - SOmetimes this can be a problem - It's the one under the bonnet on the right not the one in the car.

As far as I know the earth strap is by the starter, but try using a jump lead from the battery earth to a clean metal part of the engine, if it starts OK your earth strap needs cleaning or replacing.

Did the old starter motor definitely fail? Did the smell definitely come from the starter motor?

Check the above as suggested and then try jump starting it (connect Earth lead somewhere other than battery terminal of your battery). I'm not sure how you are checking the new battery, but do make sure it is fully charged.

Probably a bit late, but I'd follow your nose.... If something has failed it could be sinking all the voltage, in which case there won't be enough to turn over the engine.

Just check the immobiliser is working to rule that out. If you stick the key in and quickly turn it over, it will turn over before the chip in the key is interrogated and then it will cut out. However it will not turn over after this unless you remove the key. When you put the key in you should see the LED in the driver door come on for about a second and then go off. If it is not flashing any codes, it's probably working.
